Each of the Five Regulations will be introduced and followed here to support training in class, and refer you to extra materiels. As for most of us, we only have one short training session a week, so it is important to refer people to further materiels to encourage them to study, practice and enquire.

Hopefully this will generate further enquiries and lively discussion in Class !

         Time : 10.00 am to 1pm
(Break at 11.15 am for coffee or hot chocolate at the farmers market)
Venue : St Peter & Paul’s School, Kickham, Clonmel
         Price : €10
Open to : Everyone (See below)
Goal : the ultimate goal of Tai Chi (Taijiquan) is to maintain a healthy body and a youthful mind.
Clonmel Yang Style Tai Chi Club (YMAA)
        Hello
On Saturday AM the 2nd September we hold our Annual start of year workshop which is open to everyone, beginners, those with a little experience, those who have been practicing for several years, and to those perhaps who are just plain curious and would like to do a term or a year to find out for (something about) themselves.
We invite friends who are practicing for some time to come along and focus on their Goals & hopes for the forthcoming year. Sometimes when you practice for a while it is easy to lose sight of the progress you have made, and you need to give a little time to look positively and what you have done so far, and to plan in a positive way for what you will do next. We would also invite our ‘regulars’ to meet with any new visitors that day & encourage them by sharing their Tai Chi experiences.
For those that are practicing a few years I am attaching a timely article from Dr Yang published end July 2011, which it may be helpful to read and discuss. Dr Yang and several of his senior students (senior students) frequently publish very short articles at ymaa.com which can be very helpful.
YMAA is dedicated to returning Tai Chi and other linked martial arts & disciplines to their roots, and to disseminating as much information as possible about these arts worldwide, through their publications and 60+ Schools and teachers worldwide.
Even though you my never practice Tai Chi for it’s martial purposes, you will be given a basic understanding of it’s roots, as you work towards your own goal of maintaining a healthy body and a youthful mind with the knowledge and techniques of Tai Chi (Taijiquan).
The Workshop format has something for everyone, especially beginners but it is also those :
        - who might be coming back to practice, or
        - those wishing to stretch their Tai Chi boundaries,
        - or people who may be looking to address some specific problem or issue for themselves personally.
There is a short workshop presentation (about 40 minutes), in which the 5 Regulations of Tai Chi are discussed ( Body, Breath, Mind, Qi (life energy) and Spirit).
There are also a couple of DVD presentations showing Dr Yang and his daughter Kate showing you some basic Tai Chi Long Form practice, and other DVD materials.
There will then be a demonstration, followed by a chance to practice :
        - some basic daily techniques, for joint loosening and stretching,
        -       one Qi Gong Set for relaxation ;
        - And then later you will have a chance to have a go at some long form Tai Chi yourself, and to have a chat with and ask questions of some of the regular students.
It is all very relaxed and informal, and later in the morning you get a chance to discuss the autumn class programme, and what’s in it for you.
YMAA Tai Chi Clonmel is a community based Tai Chi Club which frequently brings other experienced teachers to Clonmel and offers a regular systemic programme of training to people in the region. People have travelled from as far as Kilkenny, West Waterford and east Cork area to avail of these classes. We endeavour to make as affordable and accessible as possible for people.
As a Club our goal is to have up to 30 people in regular training and otherwise to help as many people as possible to understand and develop their own tai chi art for their own personal use and benefit.
Why not come and join us for the morning and see for yourself ?
         All you need is :
        - a set of warm loose clothing, water, & soft flat shoes,
        - preferably a notebook and pen but we will provide a folder with some free materials, including a free sample DVD,
        - And finally you will need €10 for registration & attendance for the morning.

We hope to see you there, and in order to attend all you have to do is text (only please) to:
        Either Fred at : 086 – 255 0845
        Or Brian at : 087 - 741 6336
You can also email : fred at : taichi.clonmel@gmail.com
        Or brian at : brian.mcdonald@oceanfree.net

Eligibilty: Age: All ages are eligible. There is no such thing as being too old, but young people under 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult.

        Health:
If you have some medical issue and you have not trained before, we can say that the opening workshop will not be too strenuous, but it might be wise to ask you doctor beforehand and to tell one of the instructors on the morning before you decide to participate. Doctors and physio’s are regularly recommending these classes to their patients, but of course you do need to tell us in strictest confidence if you have some particular concern and the instructor will discuss it with you.

The Website sub-committee is Terry Gibney, Brian McDonald, Marian Kelly and Fred Binchy. Lets get going guys - get your passwords and start enriching the site. The members section should now start to develop and new materiels should be added to the open section for visitors.

Our wonderful wood sculptor is at work and will have a number of balls ready within a couple of weeks. Those with orders need to confirm to Fred in class and get ready to hand over €75-80 for the sculptor for their ball. Very shortly after that we will do a short workshop on ball training.

WANT TO JOIN US ?

0

    Hello

If you are on this page, we assume that you have some interest in exploring Tai Chi - Qi Gong with is, and in becoming a member.

If so, we have some important information for you:

q We are happy to facilitate new members, and we provide them with easy access, as this is a voluntary community-based activity. You will be given a short trial period in which to pay just your class fees, as they arise. After a short while it is expected that you will join YMAA Ireland.

q You cannot attend class without completing a membership application form, and if you have a relevant medical condition, you must in your own interests make proper and adequate disclosure about same. If relevant, we may have to ask you for further information from your medical advisors concerning the advisability of your proceeding with Tai Chi - Qi Gong. This would be very rare, and it will be discussed in confidence with you, and you can appreciate its importance from your personal standpoint. Tai Chi - Qi Gong is to benefit your health and well-being, and there is little point in compromising that due to inadequate consultation or disclosure. We therefore ask for your cooperation in this.

q Classes are busy, and you must respect other members. You start to this by completing your membership application form outside of class, and appearing at the class with your class fees, a fully completed form, and your medical information where this is relevant.

q Your YMAA membership is essential after a while. This is the international organization which trains teachers and provides resources, and occasionally visiting teachers to Dublin and Clonmel, to facilitate your training. If you want to learn more about advanced training, & training of future Tai Chi - Qong teachers, please go to http://ymaa-retreatcenter.org . So you will understand that if these fees are not kept up then it compromises the training you ultimately receive. It is best therefore if you make arrangements to pay your YMAA membership as soon as possible. YMAA members then get some discount at certain annual events, such as a Clonmel one-day workshops, or annual training camps.

q Membership is dependent upon places being available in the class. We only have a couple of class schedules a week, and we are not going to overcrowd these obviously in the interests of current members. At the moment we are able to receive all applicants, and we hope this will be the situation for the immediate future.

q Local class fees: €10 per class : ( normally these are paid about 4/5 classes in advance, but you can speak to the class treasurer about this *)

q YMAA annual fees : €60 per annum : ( these are remitted to YMAA Ireland on your behalf, and you are then identified as a YMAA member in our members section from there forward).

    Class treasurers:

Monday evening class: Mr Terry Gibney

Saturday morning class: Ms Catherine McGuinness

Please sign and complete the attached application form, and bring it to the class treasurer a few minutes before the start of any class.

    APPLICATION_FORM_FOR_MEMBERS.pdf

    Thank you for your cooperation.

    Up to December 2009

This is the start of loading members Documents. We have now solved some of our site problems and you will be pleased to hear we are now going to add some materiels for you. These materiels will reflect upon different aspects of training. The different Regulations, namely of the Body, the Breath, The Emotional Mind, The Essence, the Qi, and the Spirit.

But take your time, these materiels will be added slowly for you to assimilate and study them. Sometimes they will be articles, and they may point you to an internet resource for further information.

Other times they will come from Teachers, such as the first item from Master Kao.

And on other occassions they will be short educational extracts from different texts. In this latter case we will always give you the full citation and if you like the extract we encourage you to buy the book for further reading. You will be pleasantly surprised, and you may find that many of the Master Yang texts for available from Director Paul Moran (YMAA Dublin/Ireland) for as little as €20 or sometimes a little more. All you have to do is ask Fred and he will pick up a copy from Paul for you. If he has'nt got it Brian McDonald will give you a couple of quick tips.

Enjoy your reading and ask questions!

It focuses a little on ankles and knees. It also provides some sensible general advice on Qi Gong Practice. If you like the text, I am sure it can be ordered through Paul without having to pay postage charges.

        About Us
About us ~ about lineage ~ And about you Lineage is important. It is the repository and conduit of knowledge. But enough about that for the moment, because we should start with you. If you intend to spend many hours in practice, as we hope you will, you are entitled to know, and it would be sensible to enquire, about the history and knowledge base of the particular school. YMAA (Go to WWW.YMAA.COM you will find our school registered there), was established by Dr Yang Wing Ming in 1982 to develop and disseminate knowledge, of Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Shaolin Kung Fu, and other related Chinese martial arts and health disciplines.
Dr Yang is probably the most published author of Tai Chi and Qi Gong materials today, having translated and published upwards of 30 texts & over 50 videos and DVD’s on Tai Chi, Qi Gong and related diciplines, often drawing from original Chinese resources. He strongly believes that Tai Chi must be brought back to its roots, if it is to serve people properly and effectively with respect to its martial or it's health giving benefits. The style of Tai Chi practised is Yang Style, and elsewhere on this website we discuss the programme, and for members we provide reference materials, and a discussion forum. Master Yang is now properly titled grandmaster because he has brought a number of his students to Master level today. His most important current project, is a school for training future teachers. You can see details about this at : http://ymaa-retreatcenter.org Picture history with respect to lineage: Master Kao (Master Yang’s own original teacher) Here pictured at the Portugal, in the 2009 summer camp.
Master Kao teaches Qi Gong in Portugal 2009 : Here 'The Swallow Flies Up' (of course it does!) Master Kao Centre with back to camera. The rest facing are lazy students not lifting legs! Master Yang Founder of the YMAA School. Short Details of his biography and of his textbook publications are provided elsewhere on this site. Several European Teachers with Master Kao Portugal is one of the few venues in Europe where you can avail of extensive teaching experience for several days. At the Irish Camp you will also be fortunate to have a number of very experienced teachers, including Pedro seen 2nd from right using Nicholas Yang as a crutch! Master Yang Teaches Irish Director Paul Moran in Dublin: Some Photos will be grainy recently and sorry about that! Paul Moran - Irish Director Here Paul is demonstrating some high jumping stuff, at an Irish camp. You won't be expected to do this stuff ! Damian Fox - Clonmel Director Demonstrating his kick for Master Yang. Damian mentors the Clonmel school, and will be attending periodically to review training at the Clonmel school.
Fred Binchy : Fred is your local facilitator.
What is a teacher? You will often hear people describing themselves in terms of having "10 years training" and so forth. You need to have more information at that point. If this was a commercial airline pilot, you would like to know when he last flew a plane, and more especially how many ‘flying hours’ he has recorded within the past several years. Fred has been training for about 10 years, but you can sure strike that from the record because the first few years very scratchy and you sure would'nt want him to fly the plane. He turned in the direction of YMAA in 2004 because it offered a systemic and a comprehensive training programme, with plentiful background study and reference materials. Since then he has punched up several thousand hours of flying time, which gives him a base from (foundations, no walls) through which he can help you in your training. However through this School you don't fly un-piloted. There is instrumentation, controls and recorders to guide your flying time so that it is of good value to you. You will be regularly in training and reviewed by the Director, Damian in accordance with the YMAA Tai Chi and Qi Gong Stripe Programme, You will be part of the Irish Annual Training Camps through which you will access Teachers with extensive experience and qualifications, and you will also be able to access more teaching and materiels as your learning proceeds. You will also that some of the Teachers you will meet have extensive experience & qualifications in the YMAA Programme. Some of them are in full time teaching and training.
We will explain more about how the school works when you visit us. But in the meantime we like to think Clonmel is a little special because it is a local faciliation group. They set out to help each other and to facilitate each other's training in every way they can. If you go to our first newsletter you will see the bunch who have been training together for a number of years now. Long may it continue 'guys' and you the reader are very welcome to join them. See you there.

About Master Yang

Dr Yang History

      About Dr. Yang

Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is an acclaimed author and teacher of Kung Fu, Tai Chi Chuan and Chin Na grappling, and a leading authority on Qigong (Chi Kung).

He was born on August 11th, 1946, in Xinzhu Xian, Taiwan, Republic of China. He started his Kung Fu training at the age of fifteen under Master Cheng, Gin-Gsao. In thirteen years of study under Master Cheng, Dr. Yang became an expert in the White Crane Style of Chinese martial arts.

At the age of sixteen, Dr. Yang began the study of Yang Style Taijiquan under Master Kao Tao. Dr. Yang has mastered the Taiji barehand sequence, pushing hands and Taiji Qigong.

At age eighteen Dr. Yang entered Tamkang University in Taipei to study physics. Dr. Yang came to the United States in 1974 to study Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, where he earned his Ph.D.

Yang's Martial Arts Association was established in Boston, MA in 1982. With the intent of preserving traditional Chinese Kung Fu and Qigong , Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming began training students in the rigors of Shaolin Long Fist and White Crane Gongfu as well as Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan. Dr. Yang also undertook his life-long dream of teaching and researching the Chinese arts and introducing them to the West through many books, videos and DVDs.

YMAA Publication Center was founded on January 1, 1984 with the goal of producing superior books and instructional videotapes on Qigong and Chinese martial arts. YMAA was also an early pioneer in the DVD industry, producing in-depth, extended-play DVDs with hours of instructional content.

YMAA Publication Center is a pioneer in the cultural exchange between the East and West. While the West has successfully developed the material sciences, the East is celebrated for its levels of spiritual cultivation. During this ongoing period of exchange, the building of bridges is critical for the successful integration of the achievements of both societies.

Dr. Yang has published over thirty books and fifty videos and DVDs on the martial arts and Qigong. His work has been translated into many foreign languages, including French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian, Dutch, Czech, Bulgarian and Russian.

For over 30 years, Dr. Yang travelled to teach at YMAA International Branch and Provisional schools and in seminars worldwide.. He also frequently travels within America and around the world presenting lectures and seminars on Chinese martial arts and Qigong.

Dr. Yang has a dream. "I want to lead Chinese martial artists in the West back to their roots and help them to regain their original high level of skill and public respect. I also wish to bring Qigong training to the Western world and have it accepted by the Western medical society once and for all."

Dr. Yang was named by Inside Kung Fu Magazine as one of the people who has "made the greatest impact on martial arts in the past 100 years." He was also named Man of the Year 2007.

In January 2008, Dr. Yang's youngest son, Nicholas Yang, became the new President of YMAA International and head of the YMAA Boston school. In March, 2008, Dr. Yang moved to CA, and the 10-year training program began at the YMAA Retreat Center in September 2008.

Members Materials

The Register of Members is now ready and you can obtain from the pull down Menu

There is also a class attendance page.

In this Section there are also Documents, materiels and references provided exclusively for our YMAA Members.

        Reading materials for members:

From time to time, I will post here on the Members section, small extracts from various textbooks and publications. These are only available to paid up registered YMAA Members as part of their
        Club affiliation and training.

There will be a couple of reasons for offering these extracts:

q Sometimes I will have learned privately, that a particular member is struggling with some particular difficulty that is affecting their training, and their day-to-day enjoyment of life. The extract will be especially meaningful to that person, and hopefully it will be helpful. But it may also help other members with something similar, or with their training generally.

q On other occasions, it will be because it is relevant to some of the particular training in class at the time, or it is something that I believe may be helpful to members generally.

Where such extracts are provided, I will always give you the attribute the text by full reference to the Author, will full publication details. It is to be hoped that on many occasions members will be inspired to purchase texts they find particularly relevant or helpful to them. The extracts will always respect the laws of copyright, and assert the owners rights.
All you have to do is sign on and enter your password.
You will need Adobe and MS Word from time to time to access these items. In the Adobe Documents you may need to go [CTRL] + or - , to increase or decrease the size of the image. Discussion may take place in Class about any of the posted materiels.

The Materiels are to be found on the Webpage Members Basic Documents and Instructions.

                                                                                    Best wishes

        News / Updates to 6 Dec 09:
Read Ramel Rones intersting article here on Fibromyalgia, the results of his observations of a 12 week study of people suffering from this condition, but taking charge of their condition with resulting positive benefits. You get nothing without serious effort, but the efforts are not beyond your reach !
          tai-chi-intervention-for-fibromyalgia.pdf
And in the next article he discusses the benefits of meditation, meditation in Tai Chi Qi Gong movement, and breathing. This follows on our recent class with John Cooney, and we hope to explore more of this together very soon...

        Tai Chi Ball Training :
Is one of the fundamental training skills your are introduced to in YMAA Tai Chi Training.
A Little of this has now commenced in Clonmel in the 2009 / 10 Programme, and we hope to give to a little feel of what is going on in the attached Clip. Hope you can see it. This should come up for you double click the File Clip and if you have Windows Media player or some other media player on your PC. Double Click on the Clip and it should come up for you in another Window.
        tai chi ball.avi
If you are interested in this aspect of training please ask in Class.

Now you get an idea of how this website will work. Old news goes to the new webpages, so the "News” always stays at the top.

Saturday the 5th of December 2009 workshop :
We had a very good workshop with Damian, and afterwards he commented upon the very useful progress made by those students who have been practicing just a little longer. That is encouragement to them that he can already mark their progress in just six months, and his positive encouragement was very much appreciated.

For those who are new they should take encouragement in turn that if they showed the persistence of the others, they too can demonstrate reasonable progress in the early future. Remember your first target is 100 days
during which you are encouraged to do a little practice (almost) every day.

If I was to summarize the day, I would say that Damian focused his attention on three core areas of training which he has suggested to you will greatly benefit you personally, and your Tai Chi, Qi Gong training. For the time being I leave you to contemplate on what these three areas might be, and I welcome positive feedback in the classes.

And now we have a little competition arising from the workshop.

At our Saturday workshop, Damian outlined five areas of Regulation? :

Actually he might have mentioned Six ! So I am looking for six answers to the first question.

        First Questions (6 answers):
        (1) Can anybody guess what they were? [ answers next week ! ]

        Remaining Questions :

        (2) What were the two types of mind mentioned?

        (3) what is said to be the "banana"

        (4) what is said to be the connection between connection between Body and Mind?

As I count it, I believe there are up to 11 answers to the above questions, so it is going to be pretty easy for to pick one winner!

There will be a few "carrots" supplied for participation in this competition. The first carrot will be, that for all those participating, and you all have to participate through e-mail, corresponding only to this e-mail address taichiclonmel@gmail.com , once you have paid your YMAA membership, then you will be eligible for one free class.

Now apologies to those who have already paid their membership, and I will make the pitch even right now. Congratulations, you have just received one free class, and the others have to catch up!

        The second free carrot:

Will be on the subject of Movement….. but you cannot have this, unless you comply with :

The Rules of the Competition :

The only Rule is you have to be a Member of YMAA ! - that's the only rule! Pay your sub – if not paid, to Terry or Catherine by the 14th December.

        Prize for the Competition :

Two free classes ! Value -- €20. Yes I know it's a lousy prize, but we are a poor club so you can get with the poverty mentality.

Please make sure that you have made arrangements with Terry for your YMAA registration and then we can go ! That way you can participate in the Competition.

        Have fun !

Answer will be online! But questions or discussions can take place in class.

There will be more free carrots later, in the Member Section, but only, I regret to say, for those who are YMAA members, and wish to participate in further support resources for their training.

I look forward to seeing you there.
                                                                           Fred

What is Tai Chi

0
